. The following is a short outline of the school followed by images of the school.
China's seat of government on numerous occasions, including during the Ming Dynasty and the early Republic of China, you'll grasp the significance when you realise "nan" means south, and "bei" north : Nan Jing, Bei Jing - south capital, north capital. It also helps to know that "shan" means mountain, a welcomely dominant feature of Nanjing.
Nanjing (pop. 6m), garden city jewel and capital of eastern Jiangsu Province, is two hours by train from Shanghai, with the tourist meccas of Wuxi and Suzhou inbetween. Embraced by the Chang Jiang River (Yangtse), hills and Zhongshan/Zijinshan (Purple Mountain), the rapidly modernizing, feel-good city is rich in streets fringed with comforting trees - July and August sizzle. Some roads are reminiscent of Shanghai's famous, tree-lined Huai Hai Lu.
EMW has two programmes here - FEC classes at a centre city Middle School, and BCIT classes at NCIT (Nanjing College of Information Technology, students aged around 20-23) which is on the outskirts, north of Purple Mountain. Scores of local and foreign NCIT teachers are provided with free return coach journeys of 45min each way. It is also an ideal way to network, as both our dean and head of department travel on the same coach.
The EMW teacher who compiled this brief Nanjing outline has taught with both the FEC and BCIT programme for five years. He is truly finding Nanjing work and play a revelation.
