I graduated from University in 2008 after studying Hospitality Management and then worked for 2 years as a hospitality supervisor at one of the busiest conference centres in the UK. Although this job was what I had been working towards throughout my study I felt not only unhappy in this job but unfulfilled. I wanted to experience something more.
My decision to come to China was an easy one. Travelling to Asia to teach English was always something I had thought about but never seriously. As I sat at home during my first day off in 2 weeks I realised that not only would it be an amazing experience for all the things I would get to see and do but also gave me the opportunity to do a job that I felt would truly make me happy.
It has been a true adventure. Coming here barely able to hold chopsticks, speaking only two words of mandarin and have no previous teaching experience, to a school where I am the only foreign teacher, was definitely a challenge and I would be lying if I said it was not tough at times. There is no doubt in my mind that it was all worth it.
Being here has given me wonderful opportunities to travel and experience a different life. Of everything though, the people that I have met here in Fuzhou have made this experience truly special.
