Teaching junior middle school in Zhengzhou, I had my fair share of surprises and confusion but also many rewards. Though the surprises were sometimes stressful and the confusion sometimes frustrating, the rewards were certainly worth the stress. Probably the most rewarding aspect of the experience was the cross-cultural immersion that taught me not only about Chinese culture but about my own culture. My advice to current and future teachers is simply this: embrace the day and whatever surprise, confusion or reward it may hold.
